Welcome Back To Who’s Driving
SPEAKER_01Well, I'm here. Come on, get in. Hello, bitches back. It's time for another episode of Who's Driving? Welcome to Who's Driving? I'm Wesley Turner. And I'm Steven Murray. We're two best friends and entrepreneurs. Who's Driving is an entertaining look into the behind the scenes of our lives, friendship, and business.
SPEAKER_02These are the stories we share and topics we discuss as two best friends would on a long road trip.
SPEAKER_01Along the way, we'll check in with friends and offer a wide range of informative topics centered around running small businesses, social media, and all things home and heart.
SPEAKER_02Buckle up and enjoy the ride. You never know who's driving or where we're headed.
SPEAKER_01All we know is it's always a fun ride.
Where We’ve Been Since The Break
SPEAKER_02We had total this thing.
SPEAKER_01I think we almost did. Pull us out of the ditch, but we are back. Bitches are back. We have got to rewind, put it in reverse. So far in reverse, I don't even remember. When we left off. I know it was sometime before the Atlanta market. And I think it was like way before the Atlanta market. We got discombobulated with trips and this and that and everything. And y'all, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_02I we we we really enjoy doing this. Um, but we just got so overwhelmed. What you know, we we redid the home store. I think that's when we left off. Yeah, we were in the honestly so tired. Yeah, I was so tired, I didn't give two shits about anything. Yeah, honestly.
SPEAKER_01So we redid the store. That may be where we left off. And then I went to Florida for just a few days with my parents. Daniel and I flew down to Florida to the beach cottage. Um, so that was the wasn't that right up into the first of June? Yes, okay, yeah. And then Dylan and I were at market. No, so we went to Florida. You may have been at market when we were in Florida, spent a few days with my parents, my niece there, and I came back on I think it was Thursday, and then we left on Sunday to go to Atlanta to market because the market got moved early. We're gonna talk all about that. And then we've been every week since then, we've been gone in some form. I've been gone, you've been gone, or we've collectively been gone. So let's rewind it back to the Atlanta market. That's where we'll pick up.
Atlanta Market And FIFA Energy
SPEAKER_01So the Atlanta market was in June the first week because they were moving it because of the um FIFA. Is that over yet? When is the final World Cup? It's gotta be coming up.
SPEAKER_02It's I think they just won.
SPEAKER_01The final is done. I think so. No one. Oh, I think that's the one. No, the final's coming up. Is it yeah? Because I think there were um matches in Atlanta through the 15th. So maybe the final's like the 17th this coming weekend. Um, but anyway, so yeah. So let's talk about we'll back this baby up and go to the Atlanta market. Um, we had a great market. Everyone showed up and showed out for our live sales, was a lot of lot of fun um there. And while we were there, speaking of the FIFA, um, one of the matches was the last day or next to the last day we were there. And let me tell y'all, those European people were pouring in. The match was at noon. I went down for coffee at like nine, and they were drinking and tearing it up in the hotel that morning.
SPEAKER_02But um, the I have to say, you know, I'm not into sports at all. Um, everybody knows Dylan's a tennis player. He's a she she poo-poo tennis player. So, um, and no, I don't even go to the opens. I probably will when we go to the he said he's been trying to get you into it a little more. Yeah. He has, but I'm probably gonna go, I'll probably do the US Open when we in New York. I'll probably go to that, and then and then eventually we want to go to Wimbledon and I'll go to that. But I did I have watched it a little more, but I'm not into I'm not a big sports person. But I personally think the soccer fans and and all of those people are have a are they a lot nicer. Right. It's more of a community, like and tennis is that way too. I will say that. The tennis is that way too, they're not ugly towards each other, aggressive towards each other as much.
SPEAKER_01Not that it can't happen, but I like the general consensus, yeah. Everyone was happy, and I have loved seeing everyone from other countries on TikTok. I guess I watched one and that's just what it's been feeding me. How they have loved coming to the United States and our ranch dressing. The ranch dressing, air conditioning, like, oh my gosh, even the stadiums, air conditioning.
SPEAKER_02You know, so for some of them, it is the ranch dressing is like the number one like food thing they're going crazy for. Yeah. And it's so funny. I don't know if you've noticed, uh, and listeners out there, I don't know if if you guys have noticed, but pay attention that everybody on Instagram, you need to do one for yours. See, I'm being serious, and I'll send you one because I found a good one. Um, everyone is doing their their version of uh ranch dressing recipes.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I haven't seen that.
SPEAKER_02And so I found one that was really good and um you need to do it, and then I'll do it with Dylan for his, but it has no vinegar in it. Because a lot of people don't I like vinegar. I I I I love vinegar based anything a lot of people don't. Yeah. Real real ranch dressing is not vinegar based. It's it's buttermilk. Right.
SPEAKER_01That's uh I like vinegar, but not in not in ranch dressing.
SPEAKER_02Well, a lot of people don't. And so I found a recipe. So it was funny because the people are saying they've met people that went crazy and buying up ranch dressing to ship it home. And they're like, you don't have to do that.
SPEAKER_01You can make it. It it's better. Yeah. Why wouldn't they even go? I mean, you can buy the packs. Not that that's amazing, but it tastes pretty close to you know what I'm saying? You can buy the seasoned packs and make it, but do they have maybe they don't have um that maybe they don't have the spices to make it the um oh my gosh? Mayonnaise.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Maybe they don't have mayonnaise. In some countries they may not, they may not use buttermilk. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the ranch dressing is crazy. Yeah. Also, it's crazy them from other countries talking about driving. And I guess they don't drive like we do. Like to them, anything over two like two hours is like a major travel for them, even driving. It's a train, it's yeah. Like that's a long time. And we're like, we'll drive two hours and back in a like Well, people drive here that you drive two hours to go to a concert. Yeah, or concert or to the mall.
SPEAKER_02Many people drive two hours to go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I mean, yeah. That's like nothing. But anyway, I thought that was so so it's so fun to see it through their eyes. But so that was when we were in Atlanta.
Buying Seasons And The Horse Trend
SPEAKER_01But back to the market. So when we were there for market this time, uh I know it's hard to believe, but it's the way that it works in small business and all of your boutiques and stuff. The summer markets uh are when you go and you're mainly buying for spring, or you should be if you're running it right. You're buying for spring. So we were there. We did fill-in orders for some Christmas, like, oh, we missed this, or oh, this is cute, but you know, and some gift items for the holiday season, but mainly focused on spring 2027, your spring things, your Easter things, anything we need through like, you know, June, July of next year. But the one thing we always get asked when we've gone to a market is like, what is the biggest trend that you're seeing? And there was one in particular that blew up all over market, and it's anything equestrian.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yes, in clothing, apparel, jewelry, home home decor, um anything, and honestly, I d I don't and it's not country equestrian, it's route, it's your Ralph Lauren equestrian. It's your air yeah, it's your air mez. It's it's your Gucci Air Mez. It's your your bit bridle. Yes, yes, it's yeah, it's not home on the range. Um, it it is I think it's but horse heads, horse bust, and it's the year of the horse which plays into that too. I guess.
SPEAKER_01But it is really pretty. It's it's very pretty. I like I like the year of the horse.
SPEAKER_02I've always well, I mean, I grew up with horses, and I mean that's not really the reason I like them, but you know, I like I've always had a horse head. I've had a horse head in my home forever. I don't even know if you've noted ever noticed. It's in the guest bedroom. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I like I like any and it's not a mounted horse head. This is like a no, no, no. It's like a stone. This is not a taxidermy situation. It it's it it's actually concrete, I think. Um no no nothing like that.
SPEAKER_01We've had like driftwood horses and driftwood horse head bust over the years, but yeah, it's anything with that ice buckets with horse heads or framed prints with horses, bits and brides.
SPEAKER_02And I mean, it's always been a thing. It's always been a thing.
SPEAKER_01It's always been an accent here and there, but yeah. It is a damn thing now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, it's always been a thing with like Air Maz, with Gucci, Ralph Warren. Yeah, Ralph Lauren, but now it's really big. Um so that's kind of cool. I love that.
SPEAKER_01So Yeah, so that was the biggest trend if you want to see. And who doesn't like horses? I know, it did they are pretty and state. They're beautiful, yeah. And it's been well done, the things I've seen. Um also we have to rehash and bring up at market um an incident, I would say.
The Chinoiserie Introduction Fail
SPEAKER_01You offended someone.
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh, that was so awful. And I still have like okay. Y'all know, y'all, you listeners out there, you you guys know me well enough to know, even though you really don't know me, but you do know me. I'm not a mean-spirited person. I'm really not. I love people and I try to be a good person and yeah, and do the right things.
SPEAKER_01However, and I will say before you're however, Steven is a master at. It's really something I wish I could study, but I don't think it's something you can recreate. It is just an innate talent of yours, is he can say things to people that deliver perfectly and they always laugh about it.
SPEAKER_02And they're not offended, they're not offended, they know it's coming from a okay.
SPEAKER_01But you can just blurt it out, and it usually lands. I mean, like you can like we were where were we? We were somewhere recently on our trip. We went to a restaurant and something happened. Oh, we were at a Mexican restaurant, and I think it took them a little longer than whatever to come or whatever. I don't even remember. And the waiter, the server was like, Oh, sorry, it took so long. And Stephen's like, well, don't let it happen again. But immediately he busted out laughing. Like he can deliver it, he can just say that response. Whereas some people, I don't know if it's the tone, the delivery, it would not land, and the person would think that you're being an asshole or serious. But he immediately, this is just one example, immediately laughed and knew that you were joking. You laughed, we all laughed, it was funny.
SPEAKER_02Well, and I think it in all all fairness, I think that came from the the very short, quick interactions I had with people, like in the drive-thru at McDonald's. Yeah. Because I I had to make some kind of connection. So I was always witty. Funny. I always would say something to make them laugh or cut up.
SPEAKER_01Like, take your time, I got all day.
SPEAKER_02Or if you don't hurry your ass up, I'm gonna charge you rent. Yeah. You know, and for whatever reason, they would laugh and get in a hurry and never get mad at me. And all my employees said used to always say, if we said that, they would be calling the 800 number mad. Right. And you do it and they laugh. That's my point. And they didn't know me, they didn't know who I was, right? But I I think I perfected it in that manner of that situation.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I agree. He can say, like I just said, he can say it to anybody, he can blurt it out without them knowing. They laugh, it lands. Well, it failed.
SPEAKER_02Time it went over like a turd in the punch bowl, y'all. So set the story. You go for it. There's a um very nice, very nice people. I don't know them personally, but and if you're listening, we do like you. Yes, yes, yes. I mean, I've never heard anything but good things about these people, and um they seem to run a great business. I have nothing against them whatsoever. However, um they are on Instagram and um the husband says the word uh, you know, the blue and white.
SPEAKER_01First of all, they're not they're like 40 minutes from us.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they're very close. They're very close to and they run a great business and they're have a great reputation. So any, you know, nut it wasn't ugly at all. It wasn't meant ugly at all. In fact, I plan to go shop at their store because it's so cute. Yeah. And um, but you know, people do things on we all do, and y'all know, y'all know, because I love to go on there instead of saying buckies, I say bussies. I mean, everybody does funny things on social media to grab that attention and create the comments. It's funny, right? So the husband, the husband was speaking of oriental blue and white pattern, blue and white pattern um ceramics, which is referred to as chinoiserie. And listen, chinoiserie is a fancy word for my country ass, okay? Let's go ahead and say it. Because I know y'all are thinking it. And guess what? I promise you I had to go on YouTube how to pronounce like I do everything else because I am southern and it's just the way it is. So um, anyway, he was getting on there on Instagram and he was calling it Chinocer. Yeah. Chinocer instead of chinoiserie. So I interpreted that. I laughed, I thought it was funny. I made the interpretation that he was doing that as an attention grab. As an attention grab just to get comments. Yes, to get comments.
SPEAKER_01A funny.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just just to get that interaction with their viewers. I thought it was completely intentional.
SPEAKER_01And this he had done it a more than once on multiple times. It was an ongoing thing. And the comments would always be people calling them out and correcting him.
SPEAKER_02So I'm like, well, it's working. Right. You're getting your you know, and you do it more than once, you assume it's intentional. Right. You know, because it kind of it kind of stops loot starts losing its effect. So I I don't personally know them. Um, but like I said, I know of their business through friends and family and uh respect them and um think they run a great business. Well, I saw them and to be to be funny and introduced myself.
SPEAKER_01The crazy thing is before, okay, literally before this incident happened, Steven and I were in a showroom and he said, Oh my god, if I run into Chinosary, that's what we call him, because I don't even know his name. But if I run into Chinossery, I'm gonna introduce, I'm gonna go say whatever to him. Yeah. So I was like, no, you're not. And he's like, Yes, I am. So uh literally he said this and he was like, hey, we had an appointment for market with the rep. He said, while you're finishing up here, I'm gonna run to the restroom and then I'm just gonna go on to this appointment, meet me there, because I was waiting on them to like um print our order and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna go ahead and get it all started.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he said, I'll go ahead and get started, just meet me there. And I said, Okay, you know, I'll be there in like five minutes. Well, I get there and he's like, Oh my god.
SPEAKER_02I ran into Chinocery. So I walk into the showroom and I'll be damned. There they are. So I am trying to be funny and make the introduction, and I say, Well, hey, Chinocery. Y'all, I'm not used to this.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god.
SPEAKER_02It was like it was like a loud fart in church. I got the look of disgust. And I felt like I immediately felt horrible. Like it's one of those times it's just like oh my god. I I feel like because I would never hurt anyone's feelings or make fun of someone. No, I'll laugh with you, right? I will laugh my ass off with you. And I might laugh at you behind your back, but I'm not gonna be mean to you. Right. And I they just looked at me like I had eight heads and just shit in the floor, and I said, I was stumbling, and that never happens to me. I was stammering and stumbling, and I was like, I and then I was like, Hey, I'm I'm kind of your neighbor. I'm Steven. We own, you know, the nested fig. And you know, it ended up being fine, but I wanted to die. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Steven's like, this is the first time like I've ever had a fail. Yeah, I've had a fail. He's like, I just wanted to crawl under the table and just disappear. I was rolling in the floor laughing because that is so I I mean, I've been with you forever, and never had this failure. I'm kind of disappointed I wasn't there to witness it though. It was but when I got there, he was still red in the face. I believe. Oh, it was so bad.
SPEAKER_02And so now I'm like, I don't, I don't know that it was a funny ha-ha. Yeah. I think they he might have thought that might be a way to pronounce it, which made me feel bad. But then I thought, well, I don't know. I'm still so confused, but I'm gonna go there and I'm gonna buy stuff from them and I'm going to explain myself, and I am going to make it right one way or the other. They're not gonna think I'm an asshole. Channasri, if you happen to listen, because we don't know who happens to listen.
SPEAKER_01I like you. I like your I like your family. That would be so good. Reach out, the hotline number is in the comments. You can find us on social media.
SPEAKER_02If you are on here, reach out. We need we need to mend this this bridge that I feel like I broke down.
SPEAKER_01And maybe it wasn't that well, maybe we should just call them on the phone just randomly and say, hey, can we have a call? Yeah. You're live on the air. Yeah. Um how did you really interpret this? Because you know, if you've burned it and it's blown up, then it's fine. It does make it.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it is what it is. I mean, we all gonna go on because I'm sure that I'm sure they've never that well, they said they'd never been to our stores, but they were gonna come visit. I guess they they are probably to whip my ass. But I mean it was just so bad. It was so no one was there to witness. No one was there to say, I am so sorry. I know you didn't mean this, and I could see how bad this nobody. No, not even our rep.
SPEAKER_01Oh, the rep wasn't with you. No, you just walked up out of the blue.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no one, I had I had zero support.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I'm sorry I wasn't there. It was bad. That was the highlight of the market, though.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I expected I expected them to burst out laughing. Yeah, and say, like, I know, right? Or you know, like or or oh my gosh. That it was so it was so good for our engagement. I thought it was an engagement grab. Yeah, and evidently it wasn't. Yeah. Or they didn't understand my delivery. Yeah, that I was making a light of it. Yeah. Because I really thought it was just an engagement grab. But anyway, if you say uh you either say blue and white or you say shinocery, not chinocery.
SPEAKER_00No, wait, you didn't say it right.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's chinoiserie. Chinoiserie. Not shinoserie. No, chanossery. Chinoiserie. Chinoiserie. Chinoiserie. Chinoiserie. I'm gonna mess myself up. I might start saying chinocery.
SPEAKER_01Chinoiserie. All right. Let's say it together. Everyone who's listening right now say chinoiserie. Now we know.
SPEAKER_02And and you know, and guess what, y'all? This that is not a word that I had to teach Wesley. No, I actually knew that one. No, concierge was a big word. That took us about concierge. You you really don't need to put that extra at the end either. Concierge. Concierge. Concierge. Yes. Took us about nine months on that one.
SPEAKER_01And I can't say it the wrong way um how I used to say it, because I will convert, revert right back. And it will take me a month to figure out how to say it again. So concierge. Uh one whole. No. Which I'm probably gonna end up with one day. But oh my goodness. I know me too. Alzheimers.
SPEAKER_02It's not all timers, and it's not old timers. That sounds so disrespectful. My grandmother had it. All timers. And I know people, here's the thing. You know, here in the South, just like our Southern Southernism, sometimes we say things and we just think that's the way it is. But you know, when you have a family member that's going through it or something, you take on um sensitivities to things that really don't exist.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I don't say it in making fun of it.
SPEAKER_02That's just how I I n that's my point. I know that. Alzheimer's? I yeah, that's right. Alzheimer's. I know that. I'm just saying I can remember when my grandmother had it, and I would hear somebody say Alzheimer's or old timers or you know, whatever Southern Yeah, Alzheimer's. I would go and uh and they didn't mean any they didn't mean a damn thing about it. You know, it was just the way they were saying it. And honestly, they probably had no idea how it was even spelled. Right. So it they didn't mean one ugly thing about it.
SPEAKER_01But it's funny how well I also can't pronounce that state that Boston is in. Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_03I forgot about that.
SPEAKER_00Massachusetts. It's not Massachusetts. Hold on, Massachusetts. Not closer.
SPEAKER_01Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_00No, that's awesome. I mean I gotta think how I miss Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_01Massachusetts Massachusetts Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_02It's not there there's Massachusetts. Massachusetts. Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_01It is a hard word. Massachusetts just said it's better. Boston, Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_02It is, you know, everybody has every I'm trying to think. There are a couple words that I always have a hard time saying.
SPEAKER_00I love when Daniel makes fun of me saying that. Yeah, Daniel hates it when you say that. He'll just make so much fun of me, which I get. I mean, I understand, but the way he does it is even better.
SPEAKER_02That I always struggle with. I'll have to think about it, write it down for a podcast. It's a random word. I have tears coming down. It's a word that you don't mess up, which is crazy, but it's a word that I mess up, you'll have to think of it. Um I'll think of it.
SPEAKER_01See, we all have things that we do.
SPEAKER_02I mean, everybody does. Everybody does.
SPEAKER_01That is crazy.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, that was our biggest um, obviously, that was our trend for market, and that was um Steven making an ass of himself at market.
Clean Cities And Homelessness Talk
SPEAKER_02But oddly enough, I will say this. If y'all want to go to downtown Atlanta, it's a great time to go because it is so pretty down there.
SPEAKER_01Head there before the end of the month.
SPEAKER_02They've cleaned it up for the games. I will say, I've never felt that safe in my life. Yeah. It they have planted every spot where you can put a plant in a malt in Samalch. And they they have flower baskets. It's very, very pretty.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think that's where we left off the last episode talking about. They were getting ready. Yes, and it was, I will say, it was pretty. No homeless people. No. So you know they give them bus tickets. Bus tickets out of town.
SPEAKER_02I mean, evidently, every single time. Allegedly. Allegedly. So locals locals told us um they give them bus tickets and basically say, Where do you want to go? Yeah. And they get on the bus and go. Now, you know, you and I go down that path. What would we uh Wesley and I always play the what would we do if Where would we go? Yeah, because we you know, we're always like, okay, now if we were homeless, what would we do? Yeah, and we have had this discussion multiple times. Where would we go? How would we make it? What would we do? Um and how can I survive? We we hope and pray that never happens, but who the hell knows? But we have a plan. We have a plan. But think about it on a serious note. Well, first of all, they want them out of there so that it makes the city look better while they're having guests from all over the world. And I don't blame them. Um, because that would be a hard thing to manage. Right. But at the same time, if you're in a place that's not conducive for being homeless, whether it's weather, I'm going to the beach.
SPEAKER_01I'm going to Florida is where I said I go. Yes. Because not as far south as like Miami. I think like almost like where our cottage is, the destined area. Because here's my thinking: you, even though it gets hot in the summertime, you could get in the ocean to cool off. And bathe. And bathe in the ocean. You have a source of water. And in the wintertime, although yes, it would get chilly, it's not drastically frigid cold that you're gonna dive hypothermia. Hypothermia. Um, you know, you could find enough to cover up him.
SPEAKER_02But what would you do? That's my okay. I can get I I'm I'm good with that. But what would you do if when a hurricane hits and you're homeless?
SPEAKER_01Well, you can find a shelter, I guess. But also, I would go there because of all the vacation homes that sit empty. You would break in them? Not necessarily. No, not break in them.
SPEAKER_02Okay, the truth comes out, y'all.
SPEAKER_01No, not break in them, but you could sleep against one. You could use an outdoor shower.
SPEAKER_02Well, if you're gonna do that, you might as well crawl in a window. Well, possibly.
SPEAKER_01You could find a like a screen porch to sleep in. Like you could find there are ways to do it. Yeah, that would be my pick.
SPEAKER_02Because like at our at our beach house, I mean, I probably shouldn't advertise this, but like we don't have cameras in the back. No, we only have on the front. So if you were in our if you you could move in our screen porch, we wouldn't know.
SPEAKER_01And if you go down there, like you never go in the wintertime. Like Daniel and I usually go in January. We'll go. I have January. You have, but it is quiet. It's quiet. You could, you could, I could survive there.
SPEAKER_02Well, I can tell you where my ass wouldn't be. And you you we've talked about this. This is where we have started our conversation. What would we do if we started this years ago in New York City? Yeah, nothing. Because we both said you that so if they offered me a one-way bus ticket somewhere, I would put my ass on it to Florida for sure. Not north. I wouldn't go to the desert. We've just been to the desert. Ain't a damn thing you can do out there but sweat yourself to death. I would go to Florida. I would, because you've got water. I mean, hurricanes could be an issue.
SPEAKER_01And if you go somewhere like that that is very like outdoorsy, interactive, you know, like, and it's also vacation tourist oriented, there's there's water fountains around the walkways. There's restrooms on the beach. And I don't know about having to pick through the trash with seafood though. That's where it could get a little dicey.
SPEAKER_02But now New York, though, is freezing in the winter and hot as blazes in the summer.
SPEAKER_01So that would just be out. Yeah. So come look for me if I end up homeless in Florida. That's where I would go.
SPEAKER_02But you know, I've watched people on Instagram that that are homeless. They're not well, I mean, obviously, if you're homeless, that's a very sad situation. But they have some of them have made decisions and choices to be homeless for X amount of time while they figure up it was a plan, a temporary plan. Right. But they get pretty smart with it. I mean, they live in their car, they shower at Planet Fitness. Yeah. They like they're not going hungry. They're not they're pretty smart about it. They're just using it as a strategy. Yeah. A strategy tool, you know, they save up a down payment. Um, you know, you know, you do what you have to do.
SPEAKER_01Um Okay. Speaking of this, though, homelessness. So we we're not gonna get into our um trip on this episode because we're catching up, but we just left Palm Springs and our flight left at, well, our Uber picked us up at four in the morning or whatever. And so the Uber driver, he had had his three Red Bulls and was ready to go. Cause I asked him, I was like, now are you still up? Because he picked us up at 4 a.m. on the dock. Are you still up from the night before? Are you just getting your day started? He's like, Oh, I'm just getting my day started. So he was just rambling, but he was talking about the homeless population there and not really um having one like some of the towns do. I don't know how this even came up, but he was saying they um that they do support, they try to take care and have shelters and get people off the streets and blah, blah, blah. But that they made it a loophole that they did was they made it illegal for them to have shopping carts. Like you can't have a shopping cart on the street outside of wherever that shopping cart's from. Because if you removed it from the property, it is stolen. So you can get arrested for having a shopping cart on the street. So he was like, That's a I don't a trick or a loophole that they did with homeless people because you know they always I don't think I saw any homeless people. No, you didn't.
SPEAKER_02That's what he was talking about, how clean it is and how well I can tell you right now, you wouldn't see my ass homeless there for long because I would be dead. You would see a carcass. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't even know how you would be homeless there and not suspry. No, I mean But anyway, I thought, you know, that's kind of smart. That's kind of a smart plan, a loophole. You can't you can't stand in the middle of the street and panhandle, or like you can't collect anything in the street, like, you know, at the median at a red light or crosswalk or anything like that, and you can't have a shopping cart.
SPEAKER_02Well, and I listen, I how do we get on home? I'm not a good person. You know, some people are really good with panhandlers and homeless, and and I'm not, I'm not, y'all. I'm that person and I know what do you mean you're not? I I I give them money. Oh, yeah. And I know people say you're not supposed to. And the thing is, is if I don't have any, I don't give it because I don't have it. Yeah. But if I have it and it's on me and I feel led to, I'm gonna give it to them. And I know, listen, I have had those people. Wesley is not one of them. I will say this. Wesley has never berated me or made me feel bad for giving out money. No. Because if I feel led to, I just have to. That's what I want to do.
SPEAKER_01I don't know why you would, because I mean, in your defense or anybody's defense, if you want to give someone money, whether they're homeless or not, give them the money with the intention of they can do whatever they want with that money. Maybe they're driving a BMW and you don't know it, but that's fine. You gave them money.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's how I feel about it. And if I feel led to do it, I'm gonna do it. But I have been with people in the past that have totally chastised me. You know, you are contributing to this, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. They're just gonna use it for alcohol and drugs. And you know what I always say. If I were homeless, I would probably want drugs or alcohol. So I am giving it. Hopefully, they're getting food or whatever, but you know, they're gonna do what they're gonna do with it, and I'm not judging them for it.
SPEAKER_01You just gotta give it without expectation.
SPEAKER_02If it's in your heart to give it, you give it. So that's just how I feel about
Southernisms We Still Say
SPEAKER_02that. But while we're on you mispronouncing everything, we have to talk about. I've got a couple southernisms. It's been a minute. We've got to bring it back.
SPEAKER_01It's been a minute.
SPEAKER_02That's an important segment.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_02Because, you know, we've got a lot of people moving here, and y'all need to know how to speak the language. And I mentioned these two to Wesley because I he grew up in Tennessee in the Memphis area, which is very close to Mississippi. And I will say there are some distinct differences between where you grew up and where I grew up in rural South Carolina. The Carolinas definitely is a different Southern Right. It is very different.
SPEAKER_01It's also funny for people now to try to figure out my accent because I have You're muddled.
SPEAKER_02You're muddled.
SPEAKER_01Which I don't understand that for me, but people will like try to figure it out sometimes because I think now I have the wording or pr pronunciation.
SPEAKER_02You have a Tennessee Carolina, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh some Tennessee word slang, whatever, or draw, but then I have the Carolina Twang. Yeah. It's kind of funny because we were on last year when um we went to um the Netherlands for Daniel's trip. There was someone on the bus that was a what do you call it? Like a linguist. Is that what you call it? Whatever. He's like, I'm gonna figure out where you're from, but it's very mixed. And I was like, it is mixed, but it's funny that you pick up on that it's mixed, because you know, to me, but it a linguist probably could pick up the and he I think he ended up getting it right.
SPEAKER_02Really? Yeah, that is funny, but you yours is very mixed, which is funny to make that. Well, um, and listen, I am I am grown pure, I mean, straight out of the cornfields of Pickens County, South Carolina. And um, and it's funny where things that my grandparents said, things that I don't really say, sometimes I'll say them, but yeah, but more in jest. And honestly, I say it too because I don't know, it it almost it almost makes me feel close to my grandparents in a way sometimes when I say silly stuff. Random ass stuff. So this is a phrase that if you buy something unseen, you know, say you like when we bought our house in Florida, you know. Sight unseen. Sight unseen. Stupid, exactly what I tell everybody not to do. But it worked out. We did. It worked out. You're the s an old southern Appalachian phrase is a pig and a poke. A pig and a poke. So a poke, as you know, you know what a poke is. No. Well poke is a no. A poke is a a paper sack. Never heard of that. Like you've never got a poke of collards or something? No, never, never heard of that. I don't believe that. Like if you go to a farm stand. A bushel? No, a poke. Never heard of a poke. Okay. It's a s it's a paper sack. Okay. So a pig and a poke is you like you you bought a a paper sack and you didn't know what was in it, and you bought a pig. And you thought you were getting a diamond. Something fancy.
SPEAKER_01Pig and a poke. Oh. Pig and a poke. Not and a poke, in a poke. Pig in a poke.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_02Pig and a poke. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Huh. Well, who the hell knew? Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02And like your grandparents never had friends. I can remember friends coming over and say, I brought you a poke of squash.
SPEAKER_01No, I've never never heard. No. That does not come back to me in any form. Really? No. I don't know. Pig and a poke. I never I've never heard of poke.
SPEAKER_02Poke weed. No, that's different. But yeah, there's a weed. Okay, the next one is instead of saying I'm almost finished or almost there, um close to being completed. Yeah. You would say pert near. Pert near. Pert near.
SPEAKER_01Like P-E-R-T.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01Pert near. Pertneer.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01Pert near. Pertnere. Almost there.
SPEAKER_02Pert near painted.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. No, hadn't heard of that either. Pertnere.
SPEAKER_02You have you finished painting that house? We're Pertneer. You Y'all, if y'all are listening and you're from North or South Carolina or Georgia, I know you've heard you or your grandparents, you've heard Pertineer. Pertine ear. No. I have I do have one friend that will One friend that will say Pertnere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Pertineer.
SPEAKER_02But my grandparents always said it and I promise you I promise you at some point my dad says both of those at least once a year or more.
SPEAKER_03Hmm.
SPEAKER_01That's funny. Nope. Don't know about those. But we're we gotta wrap this up because we gotta do a live
The Cuckoo Clock Surprise Connection
SPEAKER_01sale. But I have something funny to tell you before I forget. So this is. Or are we making fun of me again? No, no, no, no. Okay. So I got in from market. If y'all were watching at market, I got in my cuckoo clock. So we did a live sale at market with the Santa, the snowmen, the smokers that are from Germany. You put an incense in them. Y'all remember those if you were watching? And in the showroom, they had cuckoo clocks. And a lot of people wanted us to do a live sale with cuckoo clocks, but we ran out of time. But I picked out my favorite, the one you picked out, which is also the one I love. And I just threw it on our order. I thought I needed a little treat. A little treat. So I got the cuckoo clock, which I love. But the funny thing is, because my I remember my mama having a cuckoo clock that was on my dad's side, but evidently my grandmother on my mom's side all also had a cuckoo clock. So really last night I was talking to my mom and the cuckoo clock went off. And she said, There goes the cuckoo clock. Did you get a cuckoo clock? And I said, Yeah. And she said, Well, what kind did you get? And I said, Well, I told her a story. We're at the showroom. They're from Germany. And I she said, Oh, always wanted mothers talking about her mother's um clock, but I don't know what happened to it. She said, Did you get the one with the deer on the front, the deer head with the two guns? And I was like, Yeah, like I got the exact same one. Isn't that crazy?
SPEAKER_02Well, and I told you when we got back from market with the damn cuckoo clocks. I grew up with a cuckoo clock too, and I wish I'd kept it. But y'all, I was overwhelmed when I cleaned out my mother's house and I donated it. But anyway, that was crazy tall. I don't know why I did it. But anyway, all the things, but anyway. Anyway, I did. Um, but so I mean, I had studied every cuckoo clock in there because some of them I really don't like. I do not, I do not like the ones with the painted shit on there. So Wesley. It's it's tomato tomato. I'm talking about what I like, but you were getting one, so I had to pick out one I can stomach. And um it's really funny. Wesley was like, I I I want one. And so I was like, Well, you can have this one or this one, or I'll break the other. And I go over to my client's house, which is a multi-million dollar home in a gated community, and I had found months ago, like a year ago, I had found a cuckoo clock that they bought in Europe, and I pull it out and I'm like, Oh my gosh, this is so cool. I have to hang this. Right. And I hung hung it in their house, and I went and it was the other one that I liked. Oh, that's funny. It had the bird, yeah. And I said, I'll be damned. That's I'm very consistent.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that is funny. But how funny is that that my grandmother would have had it umpteen years ago, and then it's the same one. My mom said that mine's, I think, bigger than what she remembered her mom's men, but it's the same one. Where's Miss Bobby's?
SPEAKER_02Do we know?
SPEAKER_01I don't think she knows what happened to it.
SPEAKER_02So well, no one would have wanted it but you, so it's might still be there.
SPEAKER_01I know.
SPEAKER_02So no one would have wanted that but you, so you should go find it.
SPEAKER_01So it might still be there, who knows? But that's what I said. So anyway, we gotta pull this baby over. Hopefully, we are back on track.
