SPEAKER_00You never know who's driving or where we're headed. All we know is it's always a fun ride. It's hot as blazes here, y'all. It is. It's so hot. And I don't mean to complain.
SPEAKER_02No, I'm not complaining. I'm stating a fact, but I am also stating that I am looking for a second home in Alaska.
SPEAKER_00God, it is so hot here. And it's, I don't know. It's one of those times. I feel like the last couple of days, and Daniel would be like, y'all shut the hell up because he's outside farming at home today. He came in. He's like, I gotta take a shower. This was the middle of the day. And I gotta just lay on the bed and cool off for a minute because it's so hot. And I'm like, gosh, he's been outside for hours working. So I know other people deal with it worse than you and I'd have to. But that's their choice. But I feel like, and I don't know if it's just me, but the last couple of days, it's like I instantly get hot and I can't get cool. Like I feel like I'm overheated.
SPEAKER_02Like you're literally gonna burst into flames. Yes. Well, you know, my dad's a contractor, so he is he has always I mean, more than fifty more than my life. So what 55 years, whatever. He's conditioned to it.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's how Daniel is. I mean, when you work out there, you do get conditioned because you gradually warm up as it warms up and you gradually get colder. Because when I first moved to Greenville, I worked at a garden center. We didn't have air conditioning, and I worked outside all day long. I mean, we had a building that didn't have air conditioner and it had a fan running. No, you there wasn't no air in there. I shot the hill. So you do get used to it, but that's also why I got the hell out of it, because it was hot and it was cold.
SPEAKER_02Well you just raining. No, you have to make a decision. I want to do the excuse me. I want to do this. And I you know, and I'll get used to it. Yeah. For me You would never get used to it.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'll I will say this though. McDonald's kitchens in the summer. Oh yeah. Any place like that gets crazy hot. And there's nothing you can do about it. I mean, even our retail stores get hot too.
SPEAKER_02I was I would it was embarrassing. I would sweat. You know, I'm a sweater anyway. Some people are just a sweat, you know, they sweat. I would be wet with sweat. I was just meant to be an owner and keep my ass at home. There you go.
SPEAKER_00Not changing the subject because it's hot, so we're gonna move on. I just got distracted, my ADD kicked
The Toe Injury Story
SPEAKER_00in. I look down at your feet. We didn't do a podcast since you cut the end of your toe off, did we? No. We hadn't talked about that. No. We're still catching up on our podcast, so we're gonna talk about our um trip to Palm Street.
SPEAKER_02You know, I fried it up and it was good.
SPEAKER_00It tasted like a potato cheese. You are nasty ass. Nasty. Um, so right before oh, it was the day before we were going to the Dallas market. Steven was walking up the steps in his condo building. He had on You got them today. My Birkin's. You're never gonna learn. You're gonna learn when you break your damn ankle.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna break my neck, is what I'm gonna do wearing Birkin stocks.
SPEAKER_00No, I know you. It's gonna be you're gonna twist and break your ankle, you're gonna fall and crack your elbow. It's gonna be like three things at the same time. It will be and a concussion that I have told you to stop wearing those damn things. So he loves to wear these Birkin stocks, and he just flips and flops and falls around in them. But you were walking up the step somehow and caught the end of your toe. And it like not it didn't literally cut his toe off, but it's an end the tip it got. And I was like, How the hell did you do that? But is that the toe? No, it's the other toe.
SPEAKER_02See, this toe's intact. This one I had to cut the nail back because don't show it to me. Um, no, it's look, it's healed.
SPEAKER_00It is much look, oh yeah, it's much better. It is much better.
SPEAKER_02Um, the crazy thing was I did it and I was like, oh, I think this is bad. You know, that instant. Yeah. And then I looked at it and I was like, that my toe was in shock. My toe was like, oh my god, what just happened? Because my toe didn't even bleed. I mean, we were in shock, me and the toe. And I looked at the toe, the toe looked at me, and I was like, oh shit. And and the my end of the toe was hanging, but there was no blood.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, it cut the meat off the tip of your toe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So by the time I got home, you know, into the condo, into the bathroom. It was bleeding. It looked like Jeffrey Dahmer had visited. Oh my God. And um, you know, it wasn't horribly painful. I mean, it was um shocking because to go to market the next day, I was like, oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Because there's a lot at your toes sensitive more than you think.
SPEAKER_02More than you think, yeah, but you know, it did surprisingly really well.
SPEAKER_00Like you even you were like, I don't know. I was like, I don't know how you're gonna walk around and that thing's gonna be with a heartbeat after a little bit.
SPEAKER_02You know, it um it really ended up okay. But I used not trying to sell anything, I'm just telling you. Um I used that salve, that mango foot repair on on that toe, and I swear I think it hurt.
SPEAKER_00I'm telling you that stuff's amazing. I put it all over my legs today. They were looking a little ashy because I thought so. They you look a little bit like a crocodile. Yeah. Well, you know, I've been out in the sun and then I just I just need to be white.
SPEAKER_02I thought you were just dirty.
SPEAKER_00No, it didn't look like that. But I put that on and they look so nice and feel so good.

SPEAKER_02here. I've never listened to anyone else's podcast. Uh yes, I know. But we should get you invited on to some. Oh, no, I'd probably get them shut down. Um, but I've been listening to clips of like uh the Chrislies podcast. Uh-huh. Todd Chrislies. Oh yeah. They ain't got shit on us. They ain't got shit on us. I mean, after I watched it, I was like, they they don't do nothing no different.
SPEAKER_00No, they just have a professional editing it and videoing it. But other than that, well then they need to be fired.
SPEAKER_02Because it's just like me and you did it. Oh well. I mean, and I just it was interesting because I was like, Oh, and it's funny to watch people when they video them on the podcast, I can tell who is keeping it very real and who isn't.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It is funny, just different podcasts, but yeah. I mean, because I'm gonna say whatever talking, whatever comes to mind, I'm I'm just gonna say speaking of podcasts and saying what you you know just think and shouldn't. Have you heard from Chinasri yet? No, I have not heard from Chinasri. Waiting. Okay, so last we've gotten lots of comments. Last week's episode resonated with so many people, evidently. The response to last week's episode, if you missed it, you need to go back and listen to it. Y'all loved it, the responses, but I was a little surprised by also how many people and said, I know exactly who you're talking about. All good things, but I know exactly who you're talking about. So I was just, I'm like, one of these people are gonna send it to them or something, like, hey, they were talking about you on this podcast, or something like that. So I was waiting for you to say, guess who reached out or something? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Well, you know, I was on social media and heard a mutual friend of ours. I'm not gonna go any further. Okay. Um, one of her old friends, they're no longer friends, was talking about her on her their on her podcast. Oh, yeah. And it was hysterical to me.
SPEAKER_00So this has nothing to do with the shinoisery. No, no, no, no. It's not Chinasri. Yeah. No, no, no. This is a completely separate thing. But the So we have a mutual friend that was listening to a podcast of her at the time was a friend. Was a friend at the time and told a whole story. They're not friends anymore. I know.
SPEAKER_02But a lot of it was embellished. Yeah. But nothing was, I mean, it wasn't. I think it was more embarrassing than it wasn't. I wasn't, I wouldn't, it w it wasn't you telling me the story and I listened to it.
SPEAKER_00I was like, it was funny.
SPEAKER_02I thought it was funny. It was a little maybe a little disparaging, but not like horrible. Yeah. You know, it's it was listen, Wesley telling how I shit my pants is way worse than this was. But she and her family were so wrecked by this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02They hired attorneys and tried to sue. And the attorney was like, You can't sue for that. Like, you can't you there's nothing you can do. Yeah. Like, it it wasn't, you know, you didn't lose your job, you were not caused any harm. It was a st it was a legit story, even though it was embellished. It's just like a comedian. I mean, well, and this person is a comedian. Yeah, is a comedian, but parodies, I mean the person that was doing the podcast is that but it was comical to me when the attorney was like, No, I think you just gotta get over this. This is and especially with social media, even though I wouldn't I wouldn't do that telling someone's name anything disparaging, yeah. Unless I really just hated them. And then I would tell them. I mean, I've talked about one of my family members, you know, on here a little bit, but I haven't even I haven't even said her name. Oh your aunt. My aunt.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. The POS. I talked about my stepmom, but she died.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00When'd she die? Recent. I mean, in the last year, right? Can't remember.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we looked it up. We looked it up. Now, was she did you ever verify if she was buried next to your dad? Yes, she was. I would go doo-doo on it.
SPEAKER_00No. I'm I'm over it. I can't hold on to that kind of energy.
SPEAKER_02No, I don't, and I don't either. I d I honestly I forgive my aunt.
SPEAKER_00But I'm surprised she did get buried next to my dad. Um just because so my dad passed away when I was 16. And I'm what, 40? It was 30 years ago. 45, it's almost yeah, and so I mean that was a long time, and she had moved on and lived with someone for the whole time. Like with within, I would say like a year. I'm not I can't remember exact timelines, but within with less than two years for sure, she was like living with someone. And and so wouldn't you think all after all that time you wouldn't have gotten buried next to my dad, by the way?
SPEAKER_02You know, to each though. Hope she enjoyed your inheritance.
SPEAKER_00I sh um I guess she did to the end. That's why she couldn't get remarried because she was she had to keep getting it. Uh-huh. Yep. Anyway, um moving on from there.
What Would You Change About Yourself
SPEAKER_00Uh besides the obvious, what would you change about yourself?
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean besides the obvious. Besides the obvious. Well, I mean, obviously, this horrible wretched face, I would that's so funny.
SPEAKER_00That's been a trend. That was like a month or so ago on TikTok. I love that. Who did I do that to? Me, you came up. I had seen it. You were like and he was like, if you didn't see it on TikTok, people would ask their spouses or whatever, like, besides the obvious, what would you change about yourself? And they would be like, the obvious. So Steven walked up to me. He's like, or we were at market or something, just chit-chatting. Um, and or maybe at dinner, and he was like, Okay, I got a question for you. Besides the obvious, what would you change about yourself? And I was like, Oh, well, let me list the obvious first and tell me what I missed.
SPEAKER_02I mean, honestly, the things I would change about myself are not huge. Because I'm very thankful that I'm not completely unfortunate. Yeah. Um, because I mean, you know, I know I'm so thankful that I have like I can see, I can hear, I can walk. I mean, honestly, we have nothing to complain about.
SPEAKER_00That's the thing. I'm like, and certain things that probably annoy me or annoy like my ADD and not being late, but that's who I am. So would I change that? Oh no. Like, would that really improve my life?
SPEAKER_02Well, and there's been studies about if you're ADD and your level of intelligence. So I'm just saying we've got a gift too.
SPEAKER_00So I don't know like anything like that. I wouldn't want to lose being ADD and be stupid. Right. That's what I'm saying. If you change certain things about yourself that like that.
SPEAKER_02Because ADD, people with ADD tend to be um have a higher level of intelligence. I mean, it's Is that what it is? It's been proven. Our brains work faster in the world.
SPEAKER_00What about when you throw in the dyslexia?
SPEAKER_02Well, that's where you get a little stupid too. No. Um no, I think I think the dyslexia, honestly.
SPEAKER_00It's a superpower too.
SPEAKER_02Well, I think it is it is directly associated with ADD. Because I think your brain works differently so fast. Yeah. Because when you're when you have ADD, that's what you know, your thoughts move at a very rapid pace.
SPEAKER_00From one to the next. This kind of brings up God, we're all over the place. But I had an ADD is out of control today. Oh my gosh, it really is. Um, I was thinking about this the other day.
ADD OCD And Gas Pump Habits
SPEAKER_00I was getting gas. And I was gonna ask you, I meant to ask you this, not even on the podcast, but it's fine. Um, so because you're in the OCD spectrum, but and RAM. And seriously, we're not making a joke. I really do. But I feel like everyone OCD. This is a good group conversation. Everyone used to, or maybe not. Maybe it was just me. Maybe I had a little OCD. But when you would get gas, you would always stop on an even number. $20, $21.
SPEAKER_02That's not OCD.
SPEAKER_00Okay. But that's I know that's not OCD, but what I'm saying is you're probably more prone to do that than someone who's, you know, woo-hoo, whatever. Just but my question, did you do that? You never stopped it like on an even number? Okay. Well then that's but what I just realized when I was getting my gas the other day, I don't do that anymore because you use credit cards or pay at the pump.
SPEAKER_02So no, no, I probably try to do that in the past when it was cash because it was easy. And the other, the other big thing is is probably because I only had five dollars, so I was trying to hit the five dollar uh true to you know, just to be truthful about it. But no, that is, and that's one of the things that a lot of people think, you know, oh I'm I'm OCD, I'm all into numbers and this and that. That has nothing to do with it.
SPEAKER_00Right. No, I know that, but being that would be something that you might land just because you're like it's a personality thing, particular, whatever. But I it was just funny to me. I just now realized, I was like, I never do that anymore because it goes back to used to you had to pay cash and you were walking in and hand them a 20 or 40 or I was digging the coins out of the car to pay for the gas.
SPEAKER_02I mean, because when I started working, I was looking the other day at the cost of things, and when I started driving, gas was like a dollar something a gallon. I mean, I remember in high school filling my car up for eight dollars. That's a small ass tank. Well, it was.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it was a Volkswagen, but Oh heck, that would go for a long time.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah. I mean, I could drive here to California on a tank of gas, but I had to put oil in it 16 times.
SPEAKER_01That's funny.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But it just dawned on me the other day. I was there and I was like, oh, I never pay attention to like what it lands on. Whereas used to, I would always round it to the nearest whole dollar.
SPEAKER_02I can remember talking about cashless.
Cashless Payments And Cash Flow
SPEAKER_02Cashless, when I say cashless, I mean credit cards, debit cards, anything, not cash. Right. When cashless really became popular in the restaurant industry, McDonald's was the last to get on board with that. And I distinctly remember it. And I'm just it's so funny that I was in the business during that time because there were so many moving parts to it. And we it was a stressor, it was a big uh deal. You wouldn't think it would be, but what you don't realize is all of those restaurants, the 15,000 restaurants in the country, were bringing in all that cash every day. So that owner was operating on that cash flow, you know. Right. They spent today, what what was spent, what people purchased today, you could spend tomorrow. Well, when cashless came about, as you know, because we live with it too, um, some of that cash wouldn't go in for two or three days.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and back in the beginning, it used to be long, like three days. It's terrible. So you have a busy day and you got to wait three days to get your money. And McDonald's I mean, it's still that way. Like we use Shopify for online. Like if we do live sales on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, we don't get that money until Tuesday.
SPEAKER_02That's a long time. It is a long time in business. And when you were used to being all cash, yeah, and then the the cashless fees in like for one McDonald's is you wouldn't uh believe every card swipe for a McDonald's restaurant for a gift card, credit card, debit card, everything is two and a half cents. Every swipe. And you're like, oh, that's not that much. Thousands of transactions. Yeah. It is insane.
SPEAKER_00But is that um is it just two and a half cents?
SPEAKER_02Wait, do you say cents? Two and a half cents.
SPEAKER_00Or they don't charge the percentage.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. There's still fees on top of that. But that is the transaction fee. That is the transaction fee. And that was just a huge number. So owners were really up to the small, but it's actually it's huge. But what saved us and what saved the whole restaurant industry, I mean how cashless works Even for us. When people were using credit cards, it's free money.
SPEAKER_00So cashless might not free money, but people have that mentality.
SPEAKER_02Our cashless sales were thir typically in McDonald's 30% higher than cash sales. 30%.
SPEAKER_00That's a lot. When you have to hand over the actual cash versus swiping your card. Very different. And I think that's what like thinking like generations now, and you all learn to what your whatever you know your generation is. So you they figure it out. But like you don't have the physical cash as much anymore. Like I had probably when I was like, I don't know, I remember my mom had to take me. I probably got a checking account when I was like 14 back in the day.
SPEAKER_02And I got mine at 12.
SPEAKER_00I may have been 12, somewhere around there.
SPEAKER_02I couldn't wait to get one.
SPEAKER_00Me either. Let me write a check.
SPEAKER_02And my mom taught me how to balance a checkbook when I was 12. And I I really, you know, I've always been good with money. Um I think some people just are, some people aren't. You know, I was a saver from um the time I was a toddler. And um, my mom was never good with money. She just spent it. If it was there, she spent it. And um, you know, it was just she was a free spirit like that. She didn't worry like, you know, like I did. And so she didn't want me to be like that. So she taught me how to balance a checkbook and she gave me a hundred dollars a month and put it in that checking account and made me pay for back in the day for like school lunches. Yeah. Whatever I needed came out, and that didn't sound like a lot. That was a lot of money in in the early 80s. And I that's what taught me how to control money.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And well, if I cut back this month and this month, I'll have a lot of extra. I can buy this or that. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00So it you know I always well, we've talked about it. I was always trying to make a dollar.
SPEAKER_02And I, you know, and I started I started working at McDonald's before I could I mean I was on the ri riding the school bus, would get off, get ready, go to work at McDonald's. Um, I would get off the school bus and walk to the bank and deposit my checks. That's funny. But yeah, so but I don't think parents do that anymore with kids. Nobody knows how to write a check.
SPEAKER_00Uh well, they don't have to because no one uses checks except for business people. I do. You use them outside of the business? Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Like I wrote a check what is today? I wrote a check Thursday. Yeah. I had a um contractor come and do something at home and I wrote him a check. I mean, how you how else am I gonna pay him? I don't know, probably Venmo or something. Oh, he doesn't have that. I don't know. He's a he's an older gentleman. He wouldn't have that.
SPEAKER_00Um, I guess you do still I'm trying to think though, like we only pay um our cleaning lady with the check.
SPEAKER_02You gotta pay her with the check.
SPEAKER_00We probably should ask her if we could just Venmo her. That's literally, I bet if I went and looked through our I don't have checks for any of my personal. We have a house account. That's the only ones that we have checks for. I bet if I went and looked through it, I bet the whole there may be like I can't even think what it would be, but maybe one other random check.
SPEAKER_02Well, I've quit writing checks like for our Florida house. Yeah I do not write checks anymore.
SPEAKER_00Well, and things get stuck if like that if you're mailing them.
SPEAKER_02Well, one of my bankers actually called me in and sat me down and said, Stop doing this.
Check Fraud And Safer Bill Pay
SPEAKER_02And said, You have to stop writing checks. And I said, Why? And they're like, Too many are being washed. You're you're in you're we've just looked at your account, you're in jeopardy. Yeah. And I was like, Oh, I mean, okay. I mean, I knew it was a thing when I owned McDonald's.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It had gotten to be a big thing because uh one of my owner friends had a she did paper paychecks. That's a big no-no. If you're working in the restaurant business now, you're not gonna get a paper check. You're gonna get a direct deposit.
SPEAKER_00I don't think anywhere.
SPEAKER_02I mean an employee washed their check and stole sixty thousand dollars. And it took her like two weeks to get her money back. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02And so the bank told me the number one area of theft. I thought this was interesting. Where there's when they steal the mail and wash the checks is energy.
SPEAKER_00Energy bills, power bills, light bill. Their electric bill.
SPEAKER_02Because they know when they see that energy, there's a check.
SPEAKER_00That's true.
SPEAKER_02So I pay uh no checks. Like before I came here today to do this podcast, I paid I paid like our um our water bill in Florida. I go online and pay and do that.
SPEAKER_00I don't I think we have all of ours are on auto draft. Actually, I don't know. Daniel does all that now for our household bills.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I went online and we don't have a water bill.
SPEAKER_00We only have electric bill. Light bill. Yeah, he does the electric bill. Um, but it may be on auto draft, I'm not sure. When I when we moved to the farm, and Daniel and I did, um, because I was do you know, had the retail stores and everything. Uh everything, all the bills are like he takes care of them at the house. I'm like, I'm not doing it here. So he does all the electric bill house payments. It's probably best. House payment. Anything that has to be paid at home, he does that. Uh because I was like, I can't take on any more back then. So or now. But now you can just go online, it's easy. Or do it on auto pay.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00It's much simpler now than are we allowed, moving on from that, are we allowed to talk about your stressful week that you had? Or are we not mentioning that? Oh, let's wait. Okay.
SPEAKER_02So let's wait until it's it's it's a till till it's a real till the story is complete. Complete. Okay. Yeah, we'll tell it from beginning to end.
SPEAKER_00It'd be a y'all enjoy it. Stressful week, but we'll talk about that later.
Southernisms Long Handles And Deep Freeze
SPEAKER_02Well, I do have some southernisms. Because, you know, we had to bring that back. You did by popular demand, I might say. By who? You no, do you know how many people would send comments and southernisms to me? Well, I mean, go for it. Everybody's got 'em. I mean, can you imagine moving here from New Jersey? You you move here from New Jersey or New York City. Can you imagine moving down the street from you in Moonville, South Carolina, and meeting some of your neighbors?
SPEAKER_00I mean, that would be like speaking a different language. But on a different side of that, if we moved to New York City or New Jersey or whatever, do they not have something? Did they not have weird words? I mean, are there things that we wouldn't recognize what they're saying?
SPEAKER_02Well, there's cultural things, like even in New York. You know, remember the first time we went to New York City, and I said, okay, we have to, you know, I had my list of things you had to do, and I said, You have to eat at a Jewish deli. And you said, I'd never had Jewish food. Like you didn't even know like what Jewish what what food was kosher and what wasn't. And it's so it was a learning curve. I mean, can you imagine if you just walked in there and you didn't know?
SPEAKER_00Well, I've been like, well, that looks good. Where's the bacon? No. I would have been like, well, this looks good. Let's just get up. But I'm just like, out of curiosity, are there like did we just make up shit in the south than they did in the north?
SPEAKER_02Well, it's it's from Appalachia, it's from the mountains. Yeah, it's a it is different here. Uh I think it's different here because of the the way the people settled here from. Mm-hmm. SPEAKER_02The term long handles is an old American nickname for long underwear, thermal underwear. It dates back to the late 1800s. SPEAKER_02Like no, you know, I was in the restaurant business. We had those big freezers. We I never said go get it out of the deep freeze. That's a walk-in freezer. That's a walk-in freezer. But this is a deep freeze. Go get go get that ice cream out of the deep freeze.

SPEAKER_00But I just um yeah. And with the chest style, the cold air stays in when you open the lid because the cold air sinks. So there's designs to that too. Okay.

SPEAKER_02Well, I don't know why they made them so small. You couldn't even get a normal size person in there without dismantling them.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh. Only reason, like I've walked through like Home Depot and stuff, and they'll have them, but I'm sure you can get regular stuff.
SPEAKER_02My cousin has one and I was like, and it's in her garage. Okay. And I walked by it one day and I was like three bags of groceries.

SPEAKER_02And she said, That's my deep freeze. I said, Oh, that's cute. I said, It's so little. I said, Is it for a dollhouse?

SPEAKER_02I don't think they pull as much power too. So they're a little more Everybody had a deep freeze back then.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Um, yeah. Oh, everyone did. That's where you stored it. Because in back in the day, especially if you were around farms or in the garden or the garden, you were preserving things, or you got a piece of a cow, or someone was hunting and you had deer meat, or something like that.
SPEAKER_02Okay, every Christmas still in 2026, every Christmas, my cousin gives everybody a cow. Like you get a processed cow for Christmas. A whole cow, not me. I don't get it. My dad does. But no, I don't I don't get the cow. But I don't have rent, I don't have a deep freeze.
SPEAKER_00That's funny. Um I what made me think what you just said though, about do you have another? Is that all you're saying? About if you have if you could buy a washer from the 60s, you would buy one.
Why Old Washers Clean Better
SPEAKER_00Do you know I saw an ad the other week about and they were acting like it was new. They're bringing back the washers with the agitator in the center of it. And they were trying, I'm gonna try to find the ad. They were trying to act like this was some kind of new our new line of that like they had invented something. Shouldn't have ever done away with it. Right?
SPEAKER_02That's the problem, right?
SPEAKER_00That is that is the problem. And I was like, they are trying to they think we all forgot about that's back when you could get your clothes clean.
SPEAKER_02We can't wash more than six things if we want it clean now, you know. And I listen, we have a nice washer and dryer, it's fine, but they're just not like they used to be.
SPEAKER_00They're not. I get pissed at mine every time I have to throw the stuff in there and walk away. Because if I stand there, I'll watch it and I'm like floats. It doesn't, it only puts enough water in there for it to like soak into like I was watch washing our quilt today before I left on our bedding. Well, you gotta do one piece of garment at a time. One, I gotta do the quilt, and then I gotta do the second thing, then I gotta do the sheet by itself, you know, because it doesn't get wet enough. And I'm like, all it does is get enough water in there for it to all absorb into the quilt. But then it is not doing anything, like it is just flopping around. It's not even enough passing through it or for it to flop around into for it to like wash it. Grosses me out.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, so when I was a kid, my my grandma Merck, she did not they did not own a clothes dryer. So they had a washing machine, an electric washing machine, and that was a big deal because she had had a ring one before that you had to pull it through. Oh yeah. So she had an electric washing machine, but she had to she had to hang out every single garment on the clothes line. Winter, spring, fall, you name it. God, that would be snow on the ground.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it was just the way it was. There was no dryer. And I can remember I I can remember saying, Grandma, why don't you get a dryer? Just run a power bill up.
SPEAKER_00You know, it's all about what light bill.
SPEAKER_02I had to run the light bill up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_02And I can remember that's we saved money. I can remember my mother making me hang clothes out on the line because it saved so much money on the power bill. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00My mom used to hang at our old house originally. There was clothes lines in the um backyard, but she typically only did like our sheets and stuff like that. Sheets towels. Yeah. I don't even know. I don't think she did the towels that much because it made them like crisp. You remember? Stand on. You could stand up, they would just be like Jeans, you could just stand on. But it felt good on sheets for them to be crisp, you know? Yeah. I don't know. So, but I'm sure I mean I know she did because I can remember the towels being stiff when they would do that. When we moved to the farm, Steven, and we've talked about this. Steven moved a week later than uh Daniel and I moved. So he was moving in his condo that he's in has, you know, a particular bougie laundry room that had the set already in there. No, it just the set fits the laundry room. So we were moving and he was like, Do y'all want my washer and dryer? I had a brand new one. I love my washer and dryer. Y'all will love this washer and dryer. Was it Maytag or Whirlpool? Okay. Whirlpool. Okay. Shit. Charcoal gray. Shit pull. So he gave me this. Very pretty. It was pretty. He gave me this. Um, this was a top load.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00And but no agitator. And it had a clear top on it. Yeah, I made sure I did not want a front loader. I knew that much. He's like, I just got this. It was probably less than a euro. I love it. It is great. I put our clothes in there, and that thing, that thing, literally, my clothes, the ones on top, when I opened it, were still on top and dry. And he was like, I never had that problem. I'm like, yeah, because at the time you were single, you washed like six things at a time because you never washed your jeans like once a year. You probably wash those one at a time. Um, so yeah, when you just throw some boxers and some socks in there, it was fine. But like when you would throw clothes in it and they would come out, shirts would come out in the tightest ball. Like this they shirts would turn into like a softball size, just ball, and you would have to unball them. And one time I was like, I cannot figure this out. There's something wrong with this. So I literally, I mean, we only kept it maybe a couple of weeks and because we went and bought new ones, but I literally sat there and watched it for the whole hour, the whole cycle. Cause you know, my brain, I was like, what is the problem? Because the first time I thought, well, I guess I put too much, you know, too many clothes in here. No, it didn't matter what it was. And I was like, this piece of crap.
SPEAKER_02Well, I'm sorry, I'm not nasty.
SPEAKER_00Uh well, you didn't notice. You're too delicate, is the problem. I didn't notice. Didn't get dirty.
SPEAKER_02You're not, I'm not.
SPEAKER_00There's there's dirty clothes, there's filth. Well, when you live on a farm, your clothes get dirty, and you need and at the time we had just moved there, so we were redoing our house and so it was just thing. So um, before we wrap it up, we were supposed to give a little catch-up on our
Palm Springs Travel Recap
SPEAKER_00vacation. Then we'll kind of be up to date. We went to Palm Springs.
SPEAKER_02Yes, you had never been, you and Dylan and Daniel had never been.
SPEAKER_00No, and I highly recommend going.
SPEAKER_02I liked it. It's a neat place to visit.
SPEAKER_00Okay, we had a great time. Great time. Even though it was hot, it was fine. Like we still had a great time. If I were going, I would probably I mean, unless you're just gonna chill. But if you're like one who's wanting to go and do stuff, I would probably only stay there like four nights or five. Because we were there and then we went to Vegas.
SPEAKER_02What ended up being five nights for us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then we came back. Yeah. But two nights in Vegas and rest there. Right. Which is all you need. Yeah, which is all you need. Because it was smaller, the downtown part was like smaller than I thought. But it's cute, it's quaint, and I would definitely like it was a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_02We didn't see any celebrity celebrities.
SPEAKER_00They were hemmed up in their house, I guess. We saw is that a southern word? Hemmed up.
SPEAKER_02Hemmed up. Hemmed up. We did see uh Dylan and I one night saw a coyote. I almost hit it imagine.
SPEAKER_00That's the only life, wild life we would have seen.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was so like I've never seen anything.
SPEAKER_00So if you wanted to make this trip, I would do it. And I loved it. And I would also make the drive, if you have a reliable vehicle, to Vegas. That was the coolest thing too.
SPEAKER_02And I would I will say this it's also just as cool if you make the drive to other areas in the world. So like if you were to drive from there to to Northern California or something, you see it. But probably the coolest drive um because I did that probably 25 years ago, that drive. Yeah, and it was just as great.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So it's really cool. Okay, back to Palm Springs. It's really cool, lots of houses. It was hot. We the tram was awesome going up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the tram takes you 8,500 feet into the air, and it was designed by the Swiss.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And it rotates, it's the largest in the world.
SPEAKER_00That rotates as you're going up so you can see all the views. So that was really cool and getting to see that whole thing. Um, their shops are cool, restaurants were great. I know some of um our people sent us like suggestions, so that was fun.
Desert Roads And Who Lives Out There
SPEAKER_00Um, we did a little shopping, then we went to Vegas, and that drive, I just I kept saying the whole time, who are these people? Like when you leave the city of Palm Springs and you get on those roads and you're driving to Vegas, and you get to a point where it says, you know, no more facilities for 100 miles, which is a long time. And you are driving through the desert, the literal desert, and then you just see these random houses. I'm like, who are you hiding from?
SPEAKER_02Just a little shack.
SPEAKER_00They're all little in the middle of the sun. Yeah. They're all very low, low buildings, I guess for the heat and stuff. But they'll just be like a block building, just tiny, but I'm like, who? It's almost like little compounds, but not in a compound sense. Just like a little I'm like, what are you hiding? Who are you?
SPEAKER_02I know, and you know what are you doing out here? Years ago, I wanted Dylan to see this. That funny you mentioned that, but like another twenty-five years ago, I don't remember, I did a swamp tour in Louisiana. And so I wanted to take Dylan on that same swamp tour. Well, evidently there's a lot more regulations now than there were then on swamp tours. So back when I did it, we actually went like places we went to where the swamp people lived, and that's not allowed anymore. Who the hell lives? I mean, and their church, their church was it was a community. Their church was built on car tires and floating in the swamp.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like we parked and went in and visited the church. It was really pretty. Yeah, it was beautiful, and I'm like, and then I would look at houses and it would look like grass. I have photos somewhere I'll show you sometime. It looks like grass, but it's algae. And and where you would have a garage, they pull their boat. And I felt so sorry. Like they some of them had dogs, but they only could run around the house? Yeah, just right there. And I said, you know me, I'm asking questions. I'm like, um, and you know, first thing I ask is, what about snakes? If you live in here, and they're like, Oh yeah, you live here, you're gonna get some snakes in the house sometime. I'm like oh no. But the land is I I it was crazy cheap. Like, and I don't know if some of that desert land is like that.
SPEAKER_00Like, some of that land is like I don't know, I don't almost free. When you go out there, I think you could just just claim it is what it looks like. I mean, because it's just desert for yeah. I mean, who even cares if you live on the land because you can't do anything with it?
SPEAKER_02Well, that's how I think the swamp is, and I think the land is super, super cheap.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, I know the swamp is.
SPEAKER_00What what else? I mean, the desert, you're literally looking, and as far as you can see, is desert. There's nothing growing, there's not farming, there's no, I mean, you come up on like the salt mines, I guess.
SPEAKER_02Um, but if you're not using it for that part of it, we're we we we went by some salt flats and we went by a uranium mine. Um there's some cool, but gosh, I could not live there.
SPEAKER_00No tr no trees. Where do those people that live out there, what the hell are you doing? Like, what are you doing with your life on the daily? You got how far are you gonna drive to get growth? I mean, there's literally nothing for like I mean, if you only lived 50 miles out there, it's nothing.
SPEAKER_02I just wouldn't none of that appeals to me. Like none of that.
SPEAKER_00I was just fascinated. The whole drive, I was like, what is this?
SPEAKER_02Like what m not all, but a a lot of New Mexico is like that. A lot of Texas is like that. Certain parts of Texas, certain parts is not. Um Arizona, California. I mean, it just depends. Like, I need to be where there's green.
SPEAKER_00Trees. Oh, I mean, when we got back here, I was like, oh, this is so pretty. The trees, the grass, the bushes, the flowers, the life. Yeah. I mean, that's like living in a toaster oven or something.
SPEAKER_02It's just it is like a toaster oven and you don't sweat as much. It's hot, but it's not as you feel like you've walked into an oven, but it's a dry heat. Like I the one thing I like about it.
SPEAKER_00People always say it's a dry heat, but it's still hot. Like you still feel like here, like the last couple of days, I feel like I've gotten internally hot and then you're just gonna smother to death. And there you feel like you get internally hot and you're just gonna burst into a flame.
Dry Heat Versus Humidity
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but still overheat. I like that heat better because I don't sweat as easily. Here, I if I walk here, if I left here and I walked half a mile and back, I would be wet. Right. There, I would walk a half a mile and back, I would not be wet, I would be hot as hell.
SPEAKER_00You might fall over dead.
SPEAKER_02I might fall over dead, but I wouldn't be wet. My clothes, I hate I hate sweating to death.
SPEAKER_00So it's still hot as hot. Because everyone always says, well, it's different because it's a dry heat. And it is true, you don't feel like you're gonna, you know, smother to death, but you feel like you're about to start hallucinating and die. Yeah, I your brain is frying.
SPEAKER_02I just don't hate it near as bad. But I I would not want to live there, but that is the only thing I don't like about South Carolina is the humidity.
SPEAKER_00But we only deal with it for a short time. Two months.
SPEAKER_02We say that. But we say that, but you really you get into September, we have these hot ass days. That's true. I've unloaded pumpkins and thought I was gonna have a heat stroke in October. That's true. I mean, it we say that, but it really stretches on and on. And right right when you're just about to mentally break, fall gets here. But that's the good thing.
SPEAKER_00It's constantly changing.
SPEAKER_02Yes, it I agree. Cause you go out there, it isn't.
SPEAKER_00It's like two seasons. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. And in and in the in the winter there, the desert's cold.
SPEAKER_00And it's very pretty out there too, in its own way. But it ain't the pretty of the south. Like it's not, it's pretty to see. It is pretty to see, but like, like I drive into my driveway and I'm like, oh, this is so pretty. Like different times of the year. Like we got Craig Myrtles down our driveway. They're blooming right now when I was leaving today. I was like, this is so pretty. In the fall, they turn like orange color all random day. I'll be you ain't ever getting that out there. It ain't nothing to look at. It is we're we're not used to that. I can't imagine looking at that all the time. But it's pretty to go see.
SPEAKER_02But Arizona to me was that way. Like, uh, you know, when I was in Scottsdale and I was like, this is pretty. I can't imagine living here.
SPEAKER_00Right. That's how I feel.
SPEAKER_02I don't mind I like visiting. I mean, there's some great hotels and spas and all these things to do, but that's not where I would live. I want to be next to trees, grass, water, running water. I like, you know, even even living in a condo downtown, I get out of my car and I can hear the creek behind me.
SPEAKER_00And it's woods and trees and greenery and green grass and flowers.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I hear the cicadas and the creek and like this is nice. Yeah. Even being downtown in a condo, because we are on six acres, yeah. You're right, you you know, you're in a little piece of heaven, and yeah, it's cool and it's like uh I can't imagine just baking looking at the rock and baking like a lizard all the time.
SPEAKER_00You gotta have some inner iguana in you or something to live out there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and there's people that's like you know, I remember when um Savannah Guthrie's mom was kidnapped or whatever happened to that poor lady, that was awful. Won't talk about that. But um I remember when the media was at her home, and I mean it was a very nice home. Right. Um I'm sure it was a multimillion dollar home. Um and and very pretty, but I'm like, look at the landscaping. Like it's so different.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02You know, because it's like piled rock and cacti and it's just so different.
SPEAKER_00There's a barren. Yeah, it's very barren. Even when it is like landscape. But we had a lot of fun and it was really pretty to see. So if you've never been, it would it's a good, I feel like low-key vacation to go do.
SPEAKER_02Now let me ask you a question.
The Tram And Mountains Surprise
SPEAKER_02Were you shocked at how big the pine trees and stuff in the mountains of Palm Springs were?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Like, so you go from the desert of Palm Springs. Okay, first of all, when you go to Palm Springs, if you've never been, the the city, when you go downtown, like there is a massive mountain just like a block away. Like it literally, we were like, Steven's like, it looks like you can touch the mountain when you're downtown, and it literally does. So we were like, let's just drive past downtown. The road literally ran into the mountain, like two blocks from downtown. The end. The end. And it's that's what's so different than I feel like here, our mountains, um, is when even in when you're in East Tennessee and they're massive mountains, they don't just stop. It goes from like mountains to smaller mountains to like rolling hills to this. This is just like a massive all of their mountains, and they just stop.
SPEAKER_02Like it is just like a start and they stop.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's just like it popped out of the ground, and you can like drive up to it.
SPEAKER_02I mean, if we had kept the car driving, we would have driven directly into the mountain.
SPEAKER_00But not like, oh, the start of the mountain. It's like the mountain, like you where the road said the end, you look up and it's I don't know, thousands of feet just the mountain in front of you.
SPEAKER_02I mean, no, we would have hit it and died.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it would be like driving into a brick wall. Yeah, yeah. But it that's the weirdest thing from like here.
SPEAKER_02Well, and I told you because I was telling you guys when we picked you up at the airport. I'm like, when you see this, it's almost like you can just touch it because it's right there. But I thought what always amazed me, I think that was my third or fourth time going up in the tram.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, so going to the tram.
SPEAKER_02You don't imagine, first of all, it's 40 degrees cooler. 40 degrees. The day 40 some degrees cooler.
SPEAKER_00And then the day we went up there and it was like 67. So yeah. So yeah, that's 40 degrees. So and then you get up on that mountain and it's this massive like pine trees and huge, bigger than thing pines, any pines here. Oh yeah, that was really cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so it's it's and then if you go there in the winter, it's snowing up there. Yeah, so it's like that would be cool to see. It's hard to imagine. Yeah, but it was funny.
SPEAKER_00But like our mountains just don't stop like that. It's so weird. It I don't know.
SPEAKER_02That was the weirdest part of the and I'll tell you this when you visit one day when you visit California, I'll probably drag you back there. Um Southern California to me, well, and and northern. I'll like our coastline, you drive it and it's just like evens out into the ocean, you know.
SPEAKER_00Right, where there's drops off.
SPEAKER_02It's just just like you said, you're driving and you'll see a cliff and it's water. Yeah. Like, but it drops like hundreds of feet. That's crazy. It's beautiful, but it's so different than than this coast.

Um, we have like, you know, vases and jars and stuff where you can harvest your own flowers. Then we have a sit-down dinner at the farm in the flower field. It's a lot of fun. This is the third year we're doing it. Last year we got to do two dinners in the dahlias, but this year we're only doing one. Um, and last year they both sold out. But this year we can only do one because the following week, when we would normally do the second one, um, Daniel's doing a um farm tour for whatever the flower association, National Flower Association, a specialty, cut flower growers, blah, blah, blah, blah, whatever that is.
